6 Tips For Avoiding Paypal Fraud

Paypal is the largest online payment service provider in the world and is the first choice of the businessmen to send and receive payments during the cross-border transactions, because of its convenience, efficiency and safety. Tip 1 Pay much attention to the greeting name of the email. If the email is from Paypal, it will call your real name or the business name of your Paypal account. Tip 2 Never share your personal information online. You can see a link in the email which looks like a regular one. But if you click on it, you will find that it's not the Paypal website. Thus, you should ensure the Paypal website: "https:// http://www.paypal.com", because some scammers will delete "s" and only write "http://". You should keep an eye on the similar websites and make sure of the URL repeatedly. This scam is full of temptation and threat, so remember to take notice of it.

Tip 5 Be cautious about the unbidden deals. If you receive the unannounced email which claims to sell the same product you have priced recently, you should beware of it. Although the seller will give you a lower price, there's a great possibility that it is a defrauder who gets rid of the official monitor and customers' protective measures.

Tip 6 Check your Paypal account frequently. Even if you don't use it every week, you'd better log in the account to ensure there's nothing wrong with it. If you find any problems such as some deals that should be mediated immediately, you can send the problems to Paypal and the Paypal will deal with it in time. PayPal is simple, trusted, and ubiquitous

PayPal is the leading provider of internet transaction processing services. In operation for over a decade, it is a widely-trusted, secure brand, easing customer fears about dealing with potentially sketchy transactions. It allows consumers to pay in the form that they prefer -- be it through credit cards, debit transactions, or from their PayPal account balances. With over 150 Million accounts, and transacting in dozens of currencies, it is a globally-recognized brand.

Using PayPal as a payment processor, money is paid from the account of the consumers' choice to your PayPal account for each digital music download. For each such transaction, PayPal receives a small amount as their compensation for their service. This is deducted from the seller's receipts.

Two payment rates

What is not widely-known, however, is that PayPal maintains two separate fee schedules (or Merchant Processing Rates) for sellers. The fee schedule specifies exactly how much of each sale would be paid by the seller to PayPal for the service of processing the transaction. Depending upon the dollar size of your average transaction, it may be advantageous to be under one or the other schedule.

The Standard Fee costs the seller a flat rate of $0.30 (in US Dollars) plus 2.9% of the total transaction. Under this cost structure, if the artist sells a single song at $0.99, PayPal charges $0.33 to the seller for the transaction fee -- a third of the entire selling cost.

There is, however, the Micropayments Fee structure. Under this structure, the Micropayments Fee costs the seller a flat rate of $0.05 plus 5%. Using our previous example of selling a single song at $0.99, PayPal would charge only $0.10 as the transaction fee -- less than one-third the cost of the Standard Fee!

Maximizing profits

As seen above, using the Micropayments Fee structure can result in dramatic increase in profitability. Let us assume a single download of a $0.99 single is a typical transaction for your act. Under this model, you would net $0.89 per transaction employing Micropayments Fee schedule, as opposed to $0.66 under the Standard Fee schedule. Or stated another way, this increases your profits by 35%!

Is it right for me?

One can readily see that the Micropayments Fee is a much better deal for small transactions. With a lower flat rate, it makes small transactions competitive. However, with a higher percentage, it becomes less of a deal as the average transaction cost increases.

So where is the crossover point? About $12.00. If you expect your typical transaction to be lower than $12.00, it would be better to employ the Micropayment Fee. This would be exemplary of most singles and albums sold as digital downloads. If you expect your average transaction to be greater than $12.00, it would be better to employ the Standard Fee -- but do you really expect your average customer to buy all your albums at once?

Using Paypal for International Users

Using paypal as an International user is highly ineffective. Paypal is an eBay company and it has a reputation as a very effective method of paying and receiving money online! It has received amazing reviesw from people who has been using paypal for a long time. However, this is an honest review from an International user (particularly, Malaysia and some of the SEA region) using paypal for projects and receiving money online.

First off, if you're a user from the United States or some of the other approved countries that paypal has approved of, using paypal is probably going to be a breeze. I have not had the privilege of using paypal as a US resident (quite obviously) so, I cannot give you a review on using paypal as one! But as an International merchant using paypal, this is what I have to say - YOU MAY NEVER GET TO SEE YOUR MONEY AT ALL! I am a genuine merchant/freelancer who was using paypal to receive money from my International clients. They have all asked me if I had problems using paypal for payment, and obviously, keen on trying to tie the project in, I said I did NOT have a problem using paypal. I figured that if I DID eventually have a problem, I was pretty sure paypal would help me get my money from the account. After all, it's MY money in THEIR account and they cannot possibly keep the money that I have earned. In the beginning stages of using paypal, it's easy peasy - nothing to it. All a user has to do in order to start using paypal is to register. The registration process is easy enough. They automatically approve your account to make it easy for you to use paypal. Using paypal to get money into your paypal account is simple. Just provide the payer with your paypal ID: your email address. The payer using paypal as a payment gateway will only have to log into the paypal account and then using paypal's tools to send the money to your account. Simple enough. Using paypal : here's where it gets a little tough Using paypal to receive money posed some problems to me, as an International user. 1. Verification In order to withdraw money from your paypal account, you need to first verify your paypal account. The point in using paypal as a payment gateway is lost here because in order to verify the account, you need to have a US bank account or a credit card. If you're like me, an International user who does not have a means of getting a US bank account, then using paypal can get pretty rocky...ok, well, tricky. I have explored the possibility of opening a US bank account from where I live, it's possible. But the setup fee was huge. You need to pay USD299 as a setup fee. Yes, SETUP fee, not deposit. I would understand it if they told me that I would need to pay USD100 or USD50 as a setup fee (which translates to about Ringgit Malaysia 380 or Ringgit Malaysia 190) with a certain limitations to a deposit, but having to pay a setup fee of USD299 was too much for me. You can always get a credit card to verify your account in order to start using paypal to send money and receive money online. Sure thing. Except....I don't have a credit card. But I got myself a debit card cause I was sure using paypal was the only way to accepting payments from my International clients. But even if you verified your account in order to start using paypal, you cannot withdraw your money from your paypal account STILL. You STILL need to have a US bank account. 2. Sending Limit If you have not been using paypal for a long time, like me, then you're not always aware of the small tiny little word 'unverified - Malaysia' that sits comfortably right next to your paypal balance. The sending limit is there if you're not a verified paypal user. For starters, paypal has capped off the sending limit at USD100. USD100 limit on the amount you can ever send through your paypal account until you get yourself verified. I found myself in a tussle using paypal when I send USD80 to someone and then they told me that I can only send USD20 more to someone before I have to get verified. So, there was a problem using paypal to send money to someone too? And using paypal a payment gateway was also shot because I can't seem to get the money out. You see, what I was trying to do was to send whatever money I had in there to someone else in the US and get them to send the money back to me through iKobo. And although I had found the right person for this task, I was still having problems using paypal because I can't even get my money out of there to someone else so that they can send me the money - so that I can buy milk and diapers for my kids! Sheesh! In summary: what was my experience in using paypal? It was the pits! This is a user who is still hoping that paypal will brush up on their system to make it more user-friendly for International users. But unless they finetune their system to make it more user-friendly, I'd rather be shot in the foot before I'd use it again. First off, the withdrawal process is lousy because I cannot withdraw the money out from the paypal account therefore, using paypal as a payment option means that I will never smell the money that I have earned. I couldn't even close the account until I got verified, can you believe that? The person I spent talking (long distance) over the phone with for 2 hours couldn't find me a solution. Secondly, the sending limit. What happens that those people who wishes to send money to someone but don't have a credit card? What happens to the money in there? The only way out for International people using paypal is to either get a US bank account or spend the money on ebay. Which makes perfect sense - paypal is part of ebay, didn't I say? I'll just stick to what works for now - my iKobo account.

Buyers will make a bid price and then sellers will offer an asking price. The spread between those two things would be a spread of maybe 1 or 2 pips by the wholesalers. The retailers can then raise this spread anywhere from three to twenty pips. Although PayPal does offer several preventative measures to help protect you from fraudulent transactions, the risks of using PayPal as your merchant are still apparent. PayPal is currently offered to 190 Countries and 18 currencies. Due to the fact that the only Countries currently eligible for a confirmed (seller/buyer protected by the PayPal policy) PayPal shipping address are Canada, USA and the UK, this in itself leaves the doors wide open to scam artists.

There are ways for International sellers to "verify" their account, meaning they've verified their shipping address and possibly some other details making the transaction a little more safe on your end, but without a confirmed PayPal shipping address, you as a seller are not covered under the current seller protection policy in the event of an upset. If you're an eBay seller and use PayPal as your method of accepting payment, eBay has stated that they will offer seller protection when shipping to International addresses, even if they're "Unconfirmed", or International. The goal here is to increase seller confidence, sales and offer more purchasing power for eBayers abroad.

From my years of experience using PayPal as my primary merchant account on both my eBay PowerSeller account and my e-commerce websites, the following are some preventive measures to help you stay proactive when using PayPal.

1). Be sure to state your terms of sale in all of your listings/websites. If you buyer sends a payment from a unconfirmed PayPal account and they are located within the eligible zones (Canada, USA, UK) kindly request that they have the account Confirmed with PayPal, or you will not be able to ship the item. This will usually grab their attention. Confirming a PayPal address within the eligible zones is quite easy and only takes around 15 minutes, although you do need a credit card, or the process is longer. If the buyer has a high feedback score, or PayPal score you may be OK, it all depends on the value of the product rendered.

2). If the payment was completed by an International buyer take the extra step to be proactive to protect your self from a fraudulent transaction. View where the payment was sent from. There are certain areas to be extra cautious when receiving payments (Nigeria to my experience especially). Don't take anything for granted when shipping Internationally. Send the buyer a message stating that you require additional information from them, as they did not meet your minimum tenure for the transaction. Request that they confirm with you the address that the item should be shipped to (should coincide with PayPal/eBay address, if it doesn't match cancel the transaction), home telephone number (if unavailable cellular), whether the shipping address is business or residential and references to any other transactions the buyer may have recently completed using PayPal. You can then call PayPal and confirm these details. A good sign of a fraudulent buyer is when they do not respond to your message to acquire additional information, or if they use a threatening tactic to get you to ship the item. If either of these happen refund the payment immediately. I typically give 72 hours for the buyer to respond to the message. If the buyer responds in a threatening matter, report the message to eBay/PayPal and they should be able to take the appropriate measures to further investigate the individual. If they leave you negative feedback on eBay due to the issue, report it to eBay as well. They're typically very good and will have the feedback removed.

3). NEVER SHIP TO AN ALTERNATIVE ADDRESS OTHER THAN ON THE PAYPAL PAYMENT. This is very important. Many scam artists will request that you ship the item to another address and they will pay you extra to use an express service, such as DHL, or FedEx to another Country, or another city and a little bit more for the "inconvenience". This is the #1 PayPal scam that will get you every time. Once you send the item to the alternative address and they receive it they will initiate a PayPal dispute stating that they never received the item. At that point you will have no proof that you shipped the item to the address stated on their PayPal account and the funds will be returned to the buyer.

4). Another major indication of a scam is the buyer will change their shipping information within PayPal/eBay shortly after the transaction, or after the tracking information has been received. I personally require a 3 business day order processing time frame to be safe, as most PayPal notifications regarding possible unauthorized transaction will be sent in this time frame and will protect you prior to shipping the item. If you've already shipped the item PayPal will require additional information on the shipment to help resolve the situation, but the time frame for a resolution is quite tedious.

5). If the buyer tries to rush the item being shipped it could also be suspicious as well. Although there are several legitimate reasons as to why a buyer would like to have the item shipped the same day, it's truly in your best interest to abide by your policy on International shipments and unconfirmed shipping addresses, as this will save you a lot of time and money. Some buyers will use this tactic to expedite their scamming process. Once the item is shipped you will find a nice little surprise, they've changed all of their information within their eBay/PayPal account and claim that you shipped the item to the wrong address. Although both eBay and PayPal have very robust systems to detect suspicious activity such as this, the turn around for a resolution can be a long process and you could be out funds until they resolve the situation.

In conclusion most people who use PayPal to purchase products online are completely legitimate. If you follow these simple precautionary measures within your e-commerce sales, you will save yourself a substantial amount of time, money and stress in the event of a possible scam attempt. Use your best judgment, common sense and be empowered by the fact that you have the skills to stop potential scam artists in their tracks.

When an order is made, or a recurring service is being billed, an invoice is sent to the client with payment details. An invoice could be a simple e-mail instructing the client to pay funds to the hosts PayPal account via the PayPal interface, or a payment button on an invoice which links directly to the PayPal page.

When the client makes the payment, the host automatically (or manually, depending on whether or not a billing system is used) register the payment and the service is extended to the new due date.

So this seems clear, what can go wrong with this? Well, there are three parties involved.

1: The host, which sends the invoice, waits for and register payment, thus extending the service.

2: The client, which receives the invoice and makes the payment.

3: PayPal, who transfers the paid amount from the payer (the client) to the receiver (the host), and then, if the host has this set up, send payment notification to the host.

Note that the host cannot charge or bill the client. The PayPal system doesn't work this way. It is always the client who initiates payment.

In the above scenerio, it is quite possible that the host simply does not check its PayPal balance, thus never knowing that the payment is received. But this does not result in double charge. Remember the host cannot in any way draw funds from the clients PayPal account. The host may very well send invoice reminders, and suspend accounts in worst case.

So when does the problems start?

The big problem is the PayPal subscription feature. The subscription feature was created for people that makes regular PayPal payments to other people or companies. Perfectly suited for recurring amounts, such as web hosting. The PayPal subscription is also initiated by the client, not the host, and it can only be canceled by the client. With some billing systems, the host can not even see that a PayPal subscription is in place, nor see the date on which the next payment will be received.

Whenever a payment is made with PayPal, the payer is given a subscription choice. If a subscription is created, PayPal will transfer the amount every month on the date that the initial payment was made. Some hosts provide two PayPal buttons on the invoice or e-mail, one for the normal PayPal payment, and one for the PayPal subscription option.

In the PayPal subscription scenario, it is PayPal who transfers the funds according to the payers wishes. The host is only receiving the funds.

So now we have two parties responsible for transferring payments. The client making PayPal payments manually, or PayPal making the payments regurlarly according to the clients wishes.

With PayPal subscriptions, the invoice gets obsolete. The sum is always the same every time, and PayPal transfers it to the host without interaction from the client. But again, the host may not know that the client uses a PayPal subscription to pay the invoice. Some hosts suspend sites pretty quickly on non-payment, and reminds the client a few days prior to the due date that it is time to pay the bill.

The client receives the invoice reminders, thinking that its overdue, or forgetting about the PayPal subscription, and pays it. A few days later, PayPal makes the transfer according the the subscription, and thus the host is paid twice.

This has been the case in 4 out of 5 times when someone has approached me with this problem. It's not the host who charges the client twice, its the client who pays the host twice.

There is another feature that complicates things even more. Remember that the PayPal subscription payments are made automatically every month on the same date that the initial payment was done? Then consider what happens if the initial payment was made overdue.
